NAPSTER (2000)
A recreation of the original Napster client from 2000, guided by screenshots of v2.0 Beta 7. Search by artist or title, sort results by connection and ping, add users to the Hot List, and watch simulated downloads appear in your Library.
The network, chat and transfers are local simulations. Song titles are metadata examples; the player uses an original instrumental demo composed for this exhibit. Download time is compressed.
Condition: Online as vault_user. Sharing 3 files.
The program is open in its own window. Everything in it is imaginary: nothing on your computer is touched.

Welcome to Napster
You’re online as vault_user. Search for an MP3, browse another user’s library, or join a chat channel.
Getting started
- Click Search and enter an artist or title.
- Select a result and choose Get Selected Songs.
- Watch the Transfer screen, then visit Library.
Original Napster client recreation, circa 2000. Demo users and transfers run locally; the music titles are metadata examples.
Select an online user to browse their shared files.

Napster Help
Searching
Enter part of an artist or title. Advanced filters narrow results by bitrate, connection and ping. Click a column header to sort; use Ctrl or Command to select multiple files.
Hot List
Select a result and add its user to your Hot List. Online users can be browsed from that screen.
Transfers
Get Selected Songs queues files. Cancel interrupts a transfer; Retry resumes it. Completed items join your Library. Download time is compressed for the exhibit.
Playback and chat
The Library player plays an original demo instrumental. Example song titles do not play commercial recordings. Chat participants are simulated.
