This is a local demo. Contacts and replies are simulated; no Microsoft account, password or network connection is used. Add contacts, change your display name, block contacts and exchange demo messages. Closing the contact list leaves the tray shortcut available.

Create a CD-ROM (ISO) or Audio CD compilation in a recreation of classic Nero Burning ROM. Add sample files from the file browser or choose your own local files, then set the write speed and watch a simulated burn.

The recorder, disc and burn log are a local simulation. No physical CD drive is accessed and no disc image is created. Save Manifest exports a JSON list of filenames and settings; it is not a Nero project or ISO image. Files remain local.

A browser recreation of RealPlayer G2, with its channel sidebar, clip information, playback controls and green status display. Choose a Vault demo or use File → Open to play audio and video from your own computer.

The historic channel names are offline exhibits. The bundled video is an original test pattern and tone; the music is the original Vault instrumental. No commercial broadcasts are included.

This app uses browser-supported formats such as MP3, WAV, MP4 and WebM. Original RealAudio/RealVideo (.ra/.rm) codecs and RealServer streams are not implemented. Files you open stay local.

Winamp’s classic player, ten-band equalizer and playlist, recreated by Webamp. Drag the panels by their title bars, double-click a title bar to roll it up, and use the EQ and PL buttons to show or hide panels. The desktop opens it at double size on larger screens.

Press Play to hear an original Vault instrumental. Use Eject or playlist ADD → Add files to open your own music, or drop audio files onto the player. Playback stays in your browser. Z, X, C, V and B are Previous, Play, Pause, Stop and Next.

This is a browser recreation of Winamp 2, not the original Windows executable. The bundled classic skin is supplied by Webamp; Winamp names and artwork belong to their respective owners.

A classic WinZip-style archive window with its familiar toolbar and file list. Open the supplied Space Photos.zip, view a picture or text file, extract selected files, or create a ZIP from your own files.

Local files stay in this browser. Save ZIP downloads an ordinary ZIP archive. Extract downloads one file, or packages multiple extracted files together for a single download; it does not write directly into a folder on your computer. Password-protected archives, ZIP64 and executable launching are not supported.

A browser recreation inspired by early Yahoo! Messenger, with grouped friends, yellow smileys, availability statuses, instant-message windows and a Retro Lounge chat-room demo.

Contacts and replies are simulated. There is no Yahoo! account login, external chat service or message delivery. Offline messages are kept only in this page’s local demo history. Use the tray smiley to reopen the friends list after closing it.

Getting online was an event. You picked a moment when nobody needed the phone, opened the Dial-Up Networking folder, double-clicked your connection, and then listened to about twenty seconds of noise while two modems worked out how to talk to each other.

PressConnect, or double-click the connection icon, and it plays out properly. The smallConnecting to… box counts you through Dialing, Verifying user name and password, and Logging on to network. Then it is replaced byConnected to…, with the speed, the duration ticking in that odd three-digit hours format, and the bytes going up.Details opens out to show the server type and the modem.

Turn your sound on. Connect plays the original dialing and handshake recording by William Termini, fromthis reference video. The audio is hosted locally using thepublic-domain copy on Wikimedia Commons. The connection waits for the recording to finish before verifying your user name and password. The Modem speaker checkbox mutes and unmutes it without restarting the sequence. Cancel stops it immediately. The drop-down still lets you simulate an engaged line, no dial tone, or someone picking up the phone.

There was a time when tidying up your hard drive was a spectator sport. You started Disk Defragmenter, went to make a cup of tea, and came back to find the blue squares had moved about four rows.

This one works the same way, on a drive that does not exist. PressStart and watch the clusters get pushed to the front of the disk.

McAfee VirusScan 4.0.1 had a Classic interface built around three tabs: Where & What, Action, and Report. Choose a drive or folder, decide which files to check, then press Scan Now.

This exhibit recreates that on-demand scanning workflow using sample file names. Browse, file extensions, scan settings, Stop, New Scan and the activity log work locally.

The clean-drive scenario finishes without detections. The optional EICAR scenario demonstrates the old Virus Found dialog and its Continue, Delete and Move responses. It contains no test-file payload, and never scans or changes files on your computer.

A recreation of the original Napster client from 2000, guided by screenshots of v2.0 Beta 7. Search by artist or title, sort results by connection and ping, add users to the Hot List, and watch simulated downloads appear in your Library.

The network, chat and transfers are local simulations. Song titles are metadata examples; the player uses an original instrumental demo composed for this exhibit. Download time is compressed.

Three minutes of no typing and the office monitor would fall into space. This is the same idea: stars rushing past, a warp speed setting, and nothing else.

Windows 98’s System File Checker opened a graphical dialog. You could scan for altered files, adjust the scan settings, or extract one file from the Windows installation disk.

This recreation checks a sample installation and demonstrates file extraction. All operations are simulated within the Vault.
